McKellen As King Lear Creates Ticket Frenzy

LOS ANGELES — Ian McKellen is nearly as hot a ticket as Hannah Montana.

The esteemed English actor is set to play Shakespeare’s “King Lear” in six performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company at UCLA starting Friday, and tickets have been resold for more than $1,000, according to the Associated Press and the Houston Chronicle.

The entire run of the play was sold out in July on the day it went on sale, with a top price of $90. Single orchestra seats are listing at $936 to $1,706 on online ticket marketplace Stubhub. Bids for a ticket on eBay have topped $800.

StubHub! spokesman Sean Pate says the highest price actually paid for a pair has been $2,106.
