Theatre, concert tickets climb the top event rankings
TicketNews today released its exclusive events rankings for the week ending August 17, and the results show that sports events are still popular overall amongst ticket buyers, with a few theatrical shows and concerts climbing the rankings. Cher, whose show has been a Vegas top-seller for weeks, sold enough tickets last week to make a number ten debut (power score 1.35) on the Top Combined Events chart. Wicked tickets, New York Yankees tickets, and Jonas Brothers tickets are still the most popular, but theatre shows like Jersey Boys and South Pacific are moving up in the top events rankings to numbers four and eight, respectively.
The Eagles still have a popular summer tour; they have the second bestselling concert with a 4.65 power score, behind the Jonas Brothers, who have a 7.10 power score. The Eagles have an edge on Cher (power score 3.43), as well as Madonna (power score 3.33). Celine Dion was ranked at number eight last week, but this week she’s number five, with a 3.32 power score. The Cheech & Chong reunion tour sold enough tickets for the number nine spot and a 2.11 power score; Kenny Chesney, who had a top-five ranked concert earlier in the summer, is back in the rankings this week at number ten, power score 2.01.
Baseball tickets have sold well all summer, especially tickets to Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs games. But football season is gearing up, and popular football teams are gaining ground on baseball’s favorites. The Dallas Cowboys rank at number two with a 4.07 power score, behind the Yankees’ 7.39 power score and ahead of the Red Sox and Cubs. Football teams close out the rankings; numbers five through ten belong to the Pittsburgh Steelers (power score 2.34), Seattle Seahawks (1.77), Green Bay Packers (1.68), New York Giants (1.49), Cleveland Browns (1.48), and Miami Dolphins (1.44).
In the Broadway rankings, Madama Butterfly debuts at number seven with a 1.59 power score, and Mary Poppins and In the Heights are back on the charts after a brief hiatus, at numbers nine and ten, respectively. Three shows are new to the Top Theater Events rankings this week: The Color Purple (number eight, power score 1.11); Elton John: The Red Piano (number nine, power score 1.09), and Cirque du Soleil: “O” (number ten, power score 1.06). Both shows also rank highly on the Top Vegas events chart; Elton John is number three there, and Cirque du Soleil: “O” is number four.
Other happenings in Vegas: Cher has a huge number-one lead with a 56.45 power score. Bette Midler trails behind; her power score is 18.28. Cirque du Soleil has become a Vegas staple: The Beatles: Love ranks at number five and KÀ ranks at number eight. Danny Gans debuts at number seven, power score 1.82.
TicketNews Exclusive Rankings and Power Scores are based on ticket sales from the TicketNetwork Exchange™, the world’s largest secondary market exchange. A Power Score illustrates a given event’s category-specific significance. Two factors are used to calculate a power score: total ticket sales from the given event and total ticket sales within the category. As such, power scores should only be used to compare events within a particular category.
