Stone Temple Pilots tour reroutes fall concert plans for U.S., Canada

After postponing a September 21 show in El Paso, TX, alt-rock crew Stone Temple Pilots announced sweeping changes to its fall tour itinerary. The band is now on a break that stretches up to October 8, when its U.S. tour will resume at St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, FL.

Eleven markets, including El Paso, have been affected by the late-breaking changes. Only four dates have been rescheduled so far, while the remaining dates (in the South and Midwest) seem to be canned in favor of newer gigs on the West Coast and in Canada.

Previously purchased tickets will be honored for the shows rescheduled to October 19 at Raleigh Boutique Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC; October 20 at Road Runner Mobile Amphitheatre in Charlotte, NC; October 22 at The Backyard in Austin, TX; and October 23 at Concrete Street Amphitheater in Corpus Christi, TX.

Newer concerts were recently unveiled for California audiences in San Diego, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Indio and San Francisco, along with another West Coast stop in Kent, WA. North of the border, STP will now play in Vancouver, BC; Calgary, AB; and Saskatoon, SK.

Missing from the updated itinerary are dates in El Paso, TX; Lubbock, TX; Thackerville, OK; Tulsa, OK; St. Charles, MO; Simpsonville, SC; and Alpharetta, GA. STP’s new concert schedule is listed below.

Fronted by the oft-troubled and turbulent Scott Weiland, STP did not give an official reason for the rerouting. A brief press statement from the band simply noted that it “will take a short break and resume in mid-October in Florida.”

The El Paso Times suggested that “low ticket sales may be to blame” for the date-drop in that city. However, in a widely publicized (and sensationalized) concert review, the Houston Press wrote that Weiland “seemed off mentally” during the band’s September 19 appearance at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

STP had been in the middle of a lengthy summer-to-fall itinerary that launched August 10 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, CO. The nearly 40-date calendar would have ended October 16 at Santa Rosa Beach in Pensacola, FL.

Instead, the expanded U.S. and Canada tour now ends November 7 at Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, SK. The Pilots will then fly south for the winter for a series of December tour dates in Mexico, the Bahamas, Peru and Colombia.
