Boy George Delays His Return to Broadway’s ‘Moulin Rouge’

Grammy Award-winning artist Boy George was scheduled to return to Broadway’s “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” on March 18 but has postponed his appearance. He is now preparing to reprise his role as Harold Zidler ––originally depicted by Tony winner Danny Burstein–– starting March 28.

The famous artist will take over the role from Austin Durant and portray his character through May 25 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

Boy George first performed his part in the acclaimed show in 2024’s February with a-three-month engagement, returning to the Main Stem after two decades as an eccentric owner of the legendary Moulin Rouge cabaret. He made his Broadway debut in 2003 in his own musical “Taboo,” which told the story of U.K. club culture in the ‘70s and ‘80s as well as George’s own early clubbing days before fame.

The singer-songwriter and DJ was the lead singer of the English pop band Culture Club, which he formed in 1981. The band grew to fame over the years with hit singles like “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” “Karma Chameleon,” “I Just Wanna Be Loved,” “Time (Clock of the Heart),” and “Church of the Poison Mind.”

Culture Club disbanded in 1986, but Boy George has performed with the band in reunion shows since 1998. In 1986, he dropped his debut solo single “Everything I Own,” which reached No. 1 in the UK. As a solo artist, he has released nine studio albums, five compilation albums and 48 singles. His solo hit songs include “Everything I Own,” “Bow Down Mister,” “Generations of Love,” “Love Is Leaving,” and “The Crying Game” from the soundtrack for the film of the same name.

His latest album, Cool Karaoke, Vol. 1, dropped in 2021.

The Tony Award-winning “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” premiered on Broadway in 2019 and received 14 Tony Award nominations the following year, ultimately taking home 10, including Best Musical. Based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, “Moulin Rouge!” features contemporary pop songs in its score, with covers of songs such as Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Elton John’s “Your Song,” and Sia’s “Chandelier.”
