Broadway’s ‘A Wonderful World’ Launches Fundraiser for New Orleans Attack Victims
In an initiative aimed at supporting the victims of the January 1 vehicular attack in New Orleans, Broadway’s “A Wonderful World” is organizing a special fundraiser.
The Broadway Cares charity has pledged an additional $10,000 to match the contributions raised by the production, which has deep ties to the city of New Orleans — the birthplace of jazz icon Louis Armstrong.
The fundraiser, spearheaded by Darlesia Cearcy, stars as Armstrong’s wife Lucille Wilson in the musical. Cearcy, along with the cast and crew, has emphasized the importance of giving back to the city that birthed Armstrong and where the show’s narrative begins.
In a statement, Cearcy highlighted how the production — which traces Armstrong’s rise to fame from New Orleans — feels a profound responsibility to help those who have suffered in the aftermath of the attack.

“A Wonderful World sets up one foundational question: why and how did Louis Armstrong invite us into a song so full of hope, love, and light about life?” Cearcy said questioned. “As we honor Armstrong’s legacy, we cannot ignore the need to help those impacted by violence in the same city that gave birth to his legacy.”
She went on to emphasize the importance of solidarity and love, echoing Armstrong’s spirit of generosity and compassion.
“A Wonderful World” is calling on supporters to make donations to the Greater New Orleans Foundation, which works to provide essential services to local communities. Donations can be made through the foundation’s website, GNOF.org.
The musical, which premiered on Broadway at Studio 54 on November 11, 2024, has received widespread acclaim for its portrayal of Armstrong’s life and music. Co-directed by Tony Award-winner James Monroe Iglehart and Christina Sajous, the production features an ensemble cast, including Dionne Figgins as Daisy Parker, Jennie Harney-Fleming as Lil Hardin, and Kim Exum as Alpha Smith.
