Broadway’s ‘Eureka Day’ Extends Its Run Through February 2
Originally slated to close on January 19, 2025 — following a limited engagement at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre — Broadway’s acclaimed production “Eureka Day” will now run through Sunday, February 2, with a two-week extension.
Directed by Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro, Jonathan Spector’s comedy began previews on November 25, ahead of an opening night on December 16, 2024. According to the most recent Broadway League statistics, Eureka Day filled about 85% of seats early December, up by 10% from the preview weeks.
Set at a private elementary school in California, “Eureka Day” tells the story of a mumps outbreak which leads to a dispute between parents on the executive committee regarding the school’s liberal vaccination policy. As cases rise, the board realizes with horror that they’ve got to do what they swore they never would: make a choice that won’t please absolutely everybody.
“In Jonathan Spector’s timely and hysterical comedy,” the synopsis reads, “polite debate descends into ideological warfare, as a democratic utopia tears itself apart.”
The play had its world premiere at Aurora Theatre Company in Berkeley, California in 2017, and was helmed by various directors like Josh Costello, Adrienne Campbell-Holt and Katy Rudd with performances at different venues, including Off-Broadway’s Walkerspace in 2019. The current staging on the Main Stem follows an acclaimed 2022 engagement in London’s West End.
“Eureka Day” features Tony Award-winning Bill Irwin, Tony Award nominees Amber Gray and Jessica Hecht, along with Emmy Award nominee Thomas Middleditch, and Chelsea Yakura-Kurtz who made her Broadway debut with this play.
The production belongs to MTC, under the leadership of artistic director Lynne Meadow and executive director Chris Jennings, by special arrangement with Sonia Friedman Productions, Wagner Johnson Productions and Seaview.
