Tony Award-winner Itamar Moses’ “Dead Outlaw” received good reviews, following its world premiere at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre last year. It actually left its mark on 2024 by having an award-winning season. The production won multiple awards for Best Musical at the Off-Broadway Alliance Awards, Drama Desk Awards, New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards in 2024. The upcoming staging will be the first musical produced by Audible Theater performed on Broadway.

Featuring music and lyrics by David Yazbek along with Erik Della Penn, and direction by David Cromer, “Dead Outlaw” tells the true story of Elmer McCurdy, an outlaw whose mummified dead body turned up at a sideshow attraction.

“As Elmer’s body finds even more outlandish adventures in death than it could have ever hoped for in life, the show explores fame, failure, and the meaning—or, utter meaninglessness—of legacy,” the synopsis reads. “Dying is no reason to stop living life to its fullest.”

The creative team of the musical also includes choreographer Ani Taj, scenic designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Sarah Laux, lighting designer Heather Gilbert, sound designer Kai Harada, music supervisor Dean Sharenow, music director Rebekah Bruce, with orchestrations by Yazbek, Della Penna, and Dean Sharenow. Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting/Peter Van Dam. Cynthia Cahill will serve as production stage manager.
