MLB tickets, NFL tickets take over the top events chart

It’s the end of summer and sports tickets are still selling strong. TicketNews’s top events rankings for last week are in, and sports fans propelled baseball and football tickets onto the Top Combined Events chart. The New York Yankees sold the most tickets of any sports franchise and had the second-best selling record last week with a 3.44 power score, behind Wicked’s 4.59. Perhaps not as popular as the Jonas Brothers (number three), So You Think You Can Dance? (four), and the Jersey Boys (five), major sports teams are still drawing in the crowds with the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Cubs, Dallas Cowboys, and Boston Red Sox close out the overall rankings.

The sports teams that took over the combined rankings also sit atop of the sports rankings. They are followed by the Brett Favre-led New York Jets and a Brett Favre-less Green Bay Packers. Consistently among top sports events, the Pittsburgh Steelers rank at number nine this week, behind the Miami Dolphins but ahead of the San Diego Chargers.

So You Think You Can Dance? outsold all other concerts, including The Eagles’ summer tour, ranked at number three after being the top selling concert three weeks ago. Concertgoers could be turning cold to Coldplay, who drop from their previously held number five spot to number ten, behind Madonna, Rascal Flatts, Neil Diamond, Dave Matthews Band, Celine Dion and Cher.

It’s business as usual in theater and on Broadway, with the familiar fan favorites holding the top positions. In the top theater rankings, Wicked, Jersey Boys, and South Pacific are the top three sellers, followed by Lion King and Phantom of the Opera. These shows are selling well on Broadway, along with Mamma Mia! (number five on the Broadway chart), The Little Mermaid (six), and Legally Blonde (eight).

Cher is Las Vegas’s top ticket seller, having sold more tickets to her Vegas show than Bette Midler did to her show, “The ShowGirl Must Go On” or Elton John sold to his, “The Red Piano”. Cirque du Soleil “O” and Cirque du Soleil: The Beatles: Love are still Vegas favorites, they rank at numbers four and six, respectively. Vegas staple the Blue Man Group ranks at number seven.

TicketNews Exclusive Rankings and Power Scores are based on ticket sales from the TicketNetwork Exchange™, the world’s largest secondary market exchange. A Power Score illustrates a given event’s category-specific significance. Two factors are used to calculate a power score: total ticket sales from the given event and total ticket sales within the category. As such, power scores should only be used to compare events within a particular category.
